Spring Fest Mural 2026

Mural by Chloe Welch

I had the opportunity to work as the live muralist for my city’s Spring Fest! The city asked me to create a design that reflected the community, and I wanted to capture the little things that make North Augusta feel so special. I included the area’s beautiful tree canopy, a squirrel and cardinal that are familiar sights around town, and a woman biking to represent the Greeneway Trail - one of our family’s favorite places to be outdoors together.

Most of my work is created at a much smaller scale, so designing a mural came with an entirely new set of considerations. Because the artwork would be viewed from across the street as well as up close, I focused on creating a composition that worked from every distance. The lettering was enlarged for readability, while smaller illustrations and details rewarded anyone who stopped to take a closer look.

Painting live during Spring Fest was such an exciting experience. As an illustrator, I usually spend my days working alone in my studio, so it was incredibly rewarding to create in front of the community. Throughout the day, people stopped to watch the mural take shape and offered words of encouragement in real time. Seeing neighbors, friends, and families gather around as the design unfolded over the day was so special!

My family and I were preparing to move to Arizona while I was designing and painting the mural. Knowing we were about to leave made this piece feel like a small thank you to a community that had given us so much. It felt like leaving a piece of my heart in the South - a place that will always hold a special place in our story!
